Barbara Blair and JazzAffair Join vocalist Barbara Blair and pianist Tom Vickery, drummer Lou Williamson, bassist Don Cox and sax man Paul Wainwright for what promises to be a spectacular night of jazz. Anyone familiar with the jazz scene in Victoria will know how wonderful this group of musicians is.
Barbara Divides her time between concert and educational tours throughout western Canada and the Pacific Northwest; a recent tour took Barbara to Australia. Barbara’s education program, The School of Cool – An Introduction to Jazz, has played to more than 40,000 students in primary and secondary schools. Tom Vickery is renowned for holding court at Hermann's Jazz Club and the Empress' Bengal Lounge. Lou Williamson is in demand as an incredibly versatile percussionist for jazz, dixie, shows and symphony work. Don Cox, like Lou a Naden Band alumni, has performed with with jazz and pop personalities from across North America. Paul Wainwright has backed Kenny Loggins, Stevie Nicks, Michael Bublé, Martha Reeves, Jim Byrnes, Donny Walsh (Mr Downchild), Vic Damone, Gene Hardy, and opened for Herbie Hancock, Manhattan Transfer, Etta James, k.d. lang, Melissa Etheridge, The Great Guitars (Ellis, Kessel and Byrd), and The Rippingtons. |

2008 Victoria Jazz Festival Keep your eyes and ears open for news about this year's Victoria Jazz Festival, running June 20 - 29. One highlight this year is sure to be Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, Saturday June 28. The Jazz at Lincoln Center web site has a lot to offer jazz buffs, including an archive of Wynton Marsalis' radio broadcasts from 2003 to the present. He covers a wide range of topics, from "Jammin' on the Hammond" about the kings of the B-3 to "Cubana Be Cubana Bop" about the Cuban influence on Dizzy Gillespie and the foundation of Bop. |
