JAZZ STUFF |
Oscar Peterson's passing in December may not engender the tributes that followed the death of Glenn Gould, Canada's other piano master, in 1982. But it should. His great impact on jazz, if only in setting the bar for musicality and technical mastery so high, is unquestionable. Peterson avoided the seedier side of jazz life through the '50s and '60s and epitomized class and professionalism in jazz entertainment. A number of good books about Peterson are available. One of the best is Oscar Peterson: The Will to Swing by Gene Lees. Lees has written about jazz and written jazz - his tunes have been recorded by the likes of Sinatra and Bennett. Admittedly a Peterson fan, his book is a bit gushy, but he's critical of the pianist's overly-ornamental style and lack of a true blues feeling. With great insights in to the Jazz At The Philharmonic days and Peterson's collaborations with other jazz greats from Joe Pass to Stan Getz, the book is a good read.
