Summer Jazz

The Thursday Jazz Club has wrapped up for the season, but until our return on September 8, there is plenty of opportunity to catch great jazz in our area. Check the links below and watch the local papers for more information. Some venues with jazz:

Filberg Sunday Sounds, Comox - Every Sunday, June 19 through Sept 4. Including the Georgia Straight Big Band, Lensmen, Jazztet, Jenn Forsland Group, Cure All and Greg Bush.

Zocalo Cafe, Courtenay - An ongoing roster of local musicians, including Two For the Road, appear at this great location in downtown Courtenay.

Griffin Pub, Comox - Jazztet plays 'the Griff' every Sunday evening.

Downstairs at the Acme, Nanaimo - Nanimo's prime jazz venue, organized by James McRae and Louis Devoin. The summer lineup includes East West, Kyla Campbell, the Jensen Sisters, Jessica Stuart and more.

Joe's Garage, Courtenay - a few jazz programs amongst the wide variety of shows at this prime Courtenay venue.

Heriot Bay Inn, Quadra Island - Dine in Herons Restaurant to the sound of live jazz. Most Sundays, but check their schedule.

Elk's Home, Courtenay - Karen, everyone's favourite bartender, is hosting live music each Thursday evening, including many area jazz bands.

Hermann's, Victoria - not really in the area, but the mainstay for live jazz on Vancouver Island.

SOCIETY NEWS

Liam Grimm Bursary

The Georgia Straight Jazz Society is very pleased to announce the awarding of two Liam Grimm Bursaries this year. The bursary, named in memory of much loved trumpeter and music educator Liam Grimm, is given each fall to students who will be pursuing post-secondary education in music.

Annaleesa Leach, graduating from Highland Secondary in Comox, plans to attend the music program at UVic. She plays baritone sax, piano, and sings and has been part of the school's jazz, concert and R&B bands as well as the concert and jazz choirs.

Josh Dieleman is an accomplished drummer and multi-instrumentalists. Graduating from Ballenas Secondary in Parksville, he will be pursuing music studies at university this fall.

Congratulation to both Josha and Annaleesa. We wish you great success and enjoyment in your musical futures.

William P. Gottlieb famously photographed New York's golden age of jazz, the 1930s and 40s. Over 1700 of his photos, now in the public domain, are available on Flicker. Wonderful images of everybody from Miles and Monk to Leadbelly and Ernest Tubb (well, they're not all jazz).
