The Thatch Pub on Hornby Island has boasted Friday Jazz for twenty years, with a stellar cast of host and guest musicians. The Georgia Straight Jazz Society proudly presents the heart of that twenty years, the Hornby Thatch Band, in concert at the Elks on Sunday, April 25th at 7:30 pm.

This incredible band features Tony Wilson (guitar), Nick McGowan (tenor sax), Annie Siegel (piano/vocals), Darryl Bohn (drums), and Dana Inglis (acoustic bass). Their Courtenay show celebrates not only two decades of weekly live jazz, but also the release of the band’s third CD, “Last Days Of The Wild West”.

Guitarist and composer Tony Wilson has six CDs recorded under his own name, and is a West Coast Music Award winner with his band Video Barbeque.  His performing credits are vast and include appearances with Marilyn Lerner, Vinny Golia, and Gerry Hemingway.  His compositions are played by such diverse groups as the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Kokoro Dance, and Zubot and Dawson. You can learn more about Tony and hear him on myspace.

Nick McGowan has over 40 years of performing tucked into his tenor sax.  His professional career has been divided between stage and studio work in Vancouver and Toronto.  He moved to the island in the 1980s and continued as a first-call musician for local pros such as Ron Hadley and Pat Coleman.

Annie Siegel was active for twenty years in the Vancouver R&B and jazz scene, playing solo and with bands including Nightshade, and Al Neil’s Jazz Probe. Since her 1989 move to Denman Island, she’s performed at venues across Vancouver Island as well as weekly at the Thatch. Check out www.anniesiegel.com/music/ for more on Annie (and a look at her incredible art).

In addition to being the rock-solid rhythm section for the Hornby Thatch Band, the versatile Dana Inglis and Darryl Bohn play with an array of resident and visiting Hornby Island musicians.  These players have such a long history of working together that they achieve a seemingly effortless match of feel and colour on each tune.

Don't pass up this opportunity to hear this amazing group. Advanced tickets are available at Bop City, 211 Simms St. Courtenay and at Play It Again, Nordin St, Comox.
