"Armi Grano is one of the finest jazz vocalists on the contemporary jazz music scene. She has the voice that lingers in the mind, at once sweet, sensitive, sensual and intimate. There is much emotional appeal in her clear, warm voice and is sure to attract many jazz listeners...."
Lee Posser, www.jazzreview.com

JAZZ STUFF

Jazz on the Web
Except for the very earliest days, which remain somewhat mythical (check out Michael Ondatjee's wonderful little novel Coming Through Slaughter about the legendary trumpeter Buddy Bolden), the history of jazz has be remarkably well documented. One good example is the web site A Passion 4 Jazz.

The work of jazz pianist D C Dowell, the site is a wonderful resouce for the newcomer or just curious. Timelines, interviews, a jazz glossary and much more provide a great reference for anyone interested in jazz. Along with historical narrative are mini-lessons in improvisation, explanations and examples of jazz terms like turn arounds, modes and jazz scales, and sources for sheet music and recordings.

A small gem on the site is an interview with Yogi Berra (!) about jazz. A sample:

Interviewer - Can you explain jazz?
Yogi - I can't, but I will. 90% of jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, it's right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong.

A Passion 4 Jazz. Check it out.
