Desperation Jazz BandSunday, September 28 Put on your dancing shoes as the Desperation Jazz Band kicks off the Georgia Straight Jazz Society monthly concert series on Sunday, September 28th. The Desperation Jazz Band is a septet that offers an irresistible, toe-tapping repertoire rooted in Dixieland and seasoned with some swing and blues. The group was formed 24 years ago with the express intent to “just have fun” with the traditional jazz compositions of the 1920s and 1930s. Tom Pagdin, pianist and vocalist, notes that “although Desperation began as a Comox Valley band, current members hail from seven different communities on Vancouver Island.” Band personnel include Bill Cave on cornet and flugelhorn, Claudio Fantinato on saxophones, Jean-Yves Belanger on trombone, Barry Miller on string bass, Jack Clark on drums, Dan Bell on banjo and guitar, and Pagdin. All players contribute vocals to the performances, and arrangements are crafted by band members as well. Desperaton was invited by Jimmy Pattison to play on Pattison's yacht recently. Bassist Barry Miller wrote about the experience in the Alberni Times. The latest recordings from the Desperation Jazz Band include “Live At The Old School House,” recorded in Qualicum Beach; and “Swing That Music,” recorded in Nanaimo. Catch the up-close-and-personal experience of this good, old-fashioned toe-tapping music at the Elks’ Hall, 231 6th Street, on Sunday September 28th at 7:30. On October 19, Sunday Concerts presents the Sharon Minemoto Quartet with guest vocalist Laura Crema. Watch the GSJS web site for more information. |
