The Message
A Tribute to the Music of Horace Silver

Sunday, November 2
7:30 pm
Elks Hall, 231 6th Streeet, Courtenay

Tickets - Availabe at Bop City and at the door. $12 members, $15 non-members

Horace Silver, one of jazz music’s unsung heroes, turned 80 this year, celebrating nearly 6 decades of continuous performance, composition and arranging. His best-known compositions include Song For My Father, Doodlin’ and Sister Sadie. Diverse performers such as Nora Jones, Taj Mahal and Steely Dan cite Silver's strong influence on their own style and material.

A concert you don't want to miss!

The Message, formed by drummer James McRae, will present an entire evening of Silver’s evocative compositions, featuring arrangements by several different members of the group. In addition to McRae, the group is:

Phill Albert, acoustic bass, a graduate of the Jazz Music faculty at Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina);
Katelin Bowes, vocals also a VIU Jazz program graduate;
Cam Wigmore, tenor sax, has a strong background in jazz, funk, ska, swing, R & B and rock;
Greg Bush, trumpet, directs our own Georgia Straight Big Band and has performed in various big bands and jazz orchestras that have accompanied such artists as Bob Brookmeyer, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Konitz, Big Miller and Bobby Shew;
Dave McGrath, percussion, draws from the musical traditions of Africa, Cuba, and Latin America;
James McRae, drums, has been blessed to play music with Miles Black, Scott White, Phil Dwyer, Monik Nordine, Pat Coleman and many more;
Larry Miller, reeds, has long performance credits, appearing with Dal Richards, Phil Dwyer and Brad Turner, as well as recording and leading his own projects;
Darcy Phillips, piano, has toured and recorded with the Jann Arden band, and he also boasts award-winning soundtrack compositions.
