The National Jazz Awards dubbed him 2009 Guitarist of the Year.  His live recording Two Much Guitar with Oliver Gannon heads the list of Top Canadian Releases for 2008. The Georgia Straight Jazz Society presents the Bill Coon Trio at the Elks Hall on Sunday October 26th.  The intimate concert will feature Bill in the company of fellow Vancouverites Darren Radtke on bass and Bernie Arai on drums.

Bill’s jazz guitar is a treat for the listener, not only for his masterful playing but also for the level of communication with fellow players and the audience.  His performing, compositions and arrangements have been documented on over two dozen CDs.  Musical collaborations include work with noted vocalists Denzal Sinclare and Karin Plato, and elite players Chuck Israels, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brad Turner and PJ Perry.  Learn more about Bill’s work at www.billcoon.com.

Bassist Darren Radtke has stellar jazz credentials that include appearances with Ernie Watts, Cedar Walton and Ernestine Anderson, and is a frequent collaborator with Coon, on projects such as Denzal Sinclare’s Juno-nominated CD “I Found Love”.  His musical reach also extends well beyond jazz, including award-winning composition for television and video games.  Like Coon, he is extensively engaged in musical education at Vancouver’s Capilano University.

Drummer Bernie Arai works regularly with Canada’s most accomplished musicians in jazz, electronic music and Japanese taiko.   His responsive playing and spectacular colour makes him one of the go-to drummers in the Vancouver scene and he performs regularly with Brad Turner, Jon Bentley, Jennifer Scott, Sharon Minemoto, and Fred Stride.  He has not only appeared on CBC’s Hot Air, but also guest-hosted the program on two occasions.

Collectively, this trio brings exceptional jazz your way on Sunday, October 25th, with a downbeat of 7:30 pm at the Elks’ Hall in Courtenay.
