with Oscar PetersonWhen Oscar Peterson says of a young musician, “she is what we call serious”, people pay attention.  Canadian jazz bassist and composer Brandi Disterheft is the musician in question, and she proved Peterson right when she won the 2008 Juno Award for Best Traditional Jazz Recording.

The Georgia Straight Jazz Society presents Brandi Disterheft in concert on Sunday, September 27th, 7:30 pm at the Elks’ Home, 231 6th Street.  She will appear with drummer Sly Juhas, pianist Stacie McGregor, and guitarist James Robertson. Tickets are $12 for jazz society members and $16 for non-members, and are available at Bop City Records or at the door.

Top-drawer jazz drummer Sly Juhas is one of Toronto's first-call musicians, having played with Pat Labarbera, Holly Cole and Don Thompson.  He has performed at jazz festivals and concert halls all over North America, including tours with Disterheft, Richard Underhill, and Laila Biali.

Stacie McGregor hails from Winnipeg but her music has taken her well beyond her home town.  She boasts two albums, recorded in New York with that city’s finest jazz artists.  She is a power-house on piano, and has garnered two nominations for the Galaxie Rising Star Award.

Guitarist James Robertson of Toronto has one of the leading sounds in Canada's jazz/pop scene.  He has a huge stylistic range, with work in country, jazz and pop genres.  He worked for 2 years as the head composer and musical director of the National Broadcast Reading Service.
