Grab the chance to hear Eli Bennett now – in the future you’ll tell your friends “I saw him back when he still played the small clubs”.

Bennett has just been awarded the 2009 CBC Galaxie Rising Star award, after last year’s notable win of the Yamaha Young Performing Artist Award, for best North American saxophonist under 21 (in any genre).  This 20-year-old saxophonist and composer has already performed with jazz luminaries such as Oscar Peterson and Hank Jones, and is currently studying on full scholarship at Humber College in Toronto.

“Eli Bennett is one of the most gifted musicians I have seen in over 20 years”
   Denny Christianson
Program Coordinator, Humber College Music Department

Bennett’s quartet includes some of the brightest young players in Canada: Amanda Tosoff (piano), Josh Cole (bass) and Daryl Bennett (drums).  All band members contribute original music to the group.  They have been featured on CBC Radio’s premier jazz show Hot Air, and performed at the Winterruption Jazz Festival and Festival Vancouver.

"I could go on about the numerous awards the Eli continues to garnish, and there have been many. However at the end of the day, and from hearing him play, everything that he has received has been well deserved. It is young musicians like Eli Bennett who will keep the jazz scene alive, plus [put] another notch in Canada's long list of superb players."

This special appearance by the Eli Bennett Quartet is the final ticketed event in the 2008/09 concert series put on by the Georgia Straight Jazz Society.
