Georgia Straight Jazz Society presents the Dave Stewart Sextet in concert on Sunday February 15th, in a tribute to legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. Hubbard died December 29, 2008 at the age of 70. His death prompted many spoken and written tributes, among them Herbie Hancock’s comment that “Freddie Hubbard was, in my opinion, the greatest jazz trumpet stylist of my generation.” Hubbard’s death last month also inspired Qualicum-based trumpeter and bandleader Dave Stewart to review the performer’s huge recorded output (in the 1960s alone, Hubbard cut 45 records) and craft a tribute evening. Stewart’s combo will play some of Hubbard’s most popular and enduring compositions, and a selection of his favourite jazz standards, across a range of styles from latin to ballads to hard bop. The Dave Stewart Sextet is a collection of high-calibre players from Central Vancouver Island who play a variety of jazz styles. Along with bandleader Stewart on trumpet, the group includes Stephen Buck on flutes and saxes, Dan Craven on tenor sax, Jeremy World on bass, Chad Geekie on piano, and Richard Cave on drums.
Dan Craven is also a celebrated music educator, and boasts extensive performance credits with Don Thompson, P. J. Perry, Campbell Ryga, Arnie Chynoski and Phil Dwyer. He joined Dwyer’s famed saxophone summit in 2007, and continues to teach and perform widely in big bands and in smaller jazz combos. Stephen Buck is one of the world’s premier jazz flutists with a professional career spent throughout Europe, playing woodwinds in the jazz, orchestral and musical theatre genres, including well over 1000 performances of Phantom of the Opera. Career highpoints include playing for Leonard Bernstein, at the Frankfurt Opera, and on the Letterman show in New York. Chad Geekie is a McGill University graduate in music, with a major in jazz piano. He has performed with Benny Golson, Jamie Aebersold, Phil Dwyer, Ingrid Jensen and Christine Jensen. Chad is a long time resident of Vancouver Island. Jeremy World is one of the most promising young talents to emerge on the jazz scene in recent years. He has been studying and playing with some of the top musicians in the country including Ken Lister and Brad Turner, and will extend his studies this fall at the prestigious School of Creative and Performing Arts at Humber College in Toronto. Richard Cave got an early start in music, performing extensively with jazz greats Phil Dwyer and Pat Collins. The trio received critical acclaim in the early 1980’s as the top young jazz combo in Canada. After a hiatus from playing Richard has returned to drums in the past few years, re-establishing his passion.
