Phil Dwyer Quartet

Phil DwyerThe Georgia Straight Jazz Society was proud to host the Phil Dwyer Quartet on Sunday March 4th, 2007 at the Elks Home on 6th Street.

Phil Dwyer and Ingrid Jenson just completed an incredible concert at the Denman Island Hall in January. The upcoming  March 4th concert provides a second opportunity for folks in the Valley to hear some of Canada’s very best.

The quartet consists of Phil Dwyer on sax and piano, guitarist Pat Coleman, bassist Ken Lister and drummer Kelby MacNayr.

The multi-talented Phil Dwyer, described by the Winnipeg Free Press as "a monster of musicianship", has recently returned to work out of  Qualicum Beach, after years of building his career out of Toronto. A stellar saxophonist, he is also a pianist, composer and arranger. He has performed and recorded with many of the leading Canadian and international names in jazz, pop, world and classical music and has appeared on over 50 records and cds.

Pat Coleman began playing jazz guitar after hearing the great Lennie Breau in 1969. Pat has a rich melodic styling. Pat has performed with a whose who of jazz artists including Pat laBarbara, PJ Perry, Moe Koffman, Don Thompson, Hugh Fraser, Peter Appleyard, Terry Clark, Carol Welsman and Oliver Gannon.

Jazz bassist Ken Lister has extensively toured, both within Canada and internationally; including Australia, the British Isles, Cuba and South America. Ken is a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet and VEJI. As a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet, Ken won a Juno Award for the Best Mainstream Jazz Album of 1997.

Drummer and percussionist Kelby MacNayr, having just returned from engagements in Cuba, will be ready to add an extra rhythmic flair. Kelby is active in many of Victoria's musical communities and enjoys performing in jazz, classical music, dance accompaniment, and the traditions of Brazil, Cuba, and Portugal. Kelby has performed with Louise Rose, Ingrid Jensen, Don Thompson, Hugh Fraser and The  Ron Hadley Trio.
