Saul Berson Quartet

Sunday April 19, 7:30 pm

Elks Home, 6th Street, Coutenay

You heart will race and your gypsy soul will rejoice when tango and klezmer meet jazz.  The Georgia Straight Jazz Society presents the Saul Berson Quartet in concert at the Elks’ Home on Sunday April 19th.

In over ten years together, the Saul Berson Quartet have grown a unique sound melding Middle-eastern overtones, Argentinian tango and jazz improvisation.  Their 2008 CD “Intricacy” was nominated in the Outstanding Jazz Recording category for the Western Canadian Music Awards.

Saul Berson plays clarinet and alto saxophone and, in addition to leading this quartet, performs in many other Vancouver-based groups, from swing bands to avant-garde jazz to klezmer bands.  His burnished tone on the sax and delicate touch on the clarinet marry beautifully with the full-bodied sound and cultural touchstone of Kim Darwin’s accordion.

Darwin handles both accordion and piano duties in the quartet.  There are few accordionists in the jazz world despite the instrument’s dramatic presence, so don’t miss the chance to catch this experience.  Dawson recorded an album of his original compositions, “Accordion Nights”, recognized by funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Tony Wilson plays jazz guitar with absolute mastery in multiple genres. The Hornby-Island-based musician rightly has a big profile in avant-garde circles.  However, his playing is a delightful complement to Berson and Dawson’s culturally-tinged jazz in this quartet.  His original music has been recorded by the likes of Zubot and Dawson, Francois Houle and the Hard Rubber Orchestra.

Paul Blaney rounds out the quartet on stand-up bass.  Blaney is one of the most in-demand bass players in Vancouver, for both his mainstream and avant-garde playing.  He has toured extensively, performing and recording with John Handy, Ernestine Anderson, Eddy Harris and Ingrid Jensen.
