Drawing from their self-titled debut as well as selections from the recent release Roots and the forthcoming Wings, The Ostara Project invites listeners into a sound world shaped by renewal, resilience, and collective voice.

For Canadians, the arrival of spring is momentous: the air turns fresh and full of possibility as tender green shoots reach toward the light, and the cycle of rebirth begins again. Named for the Germanic goddess of the spring equinox, The Ostara Project embodies this spirit of renewal — celebrating hope, growth, and the creative power of women in jazz.

Ostara brings together top-tier musicians, composers, and bandleaders whose work reflects the geographical, cultural, and creative diversity of Canada’s musical landscape. Led by award-winning artists Jodi Proznick and Amanda Tosoff, the ensemble features Rachel Therrien, Claire Devlin, and Valérie Lacombe, with special guest vocalist Kim Zombik, and additional guest artists invited on a project-by-project basis. Individually, they are exceptional artists; collectively, they are a formidable force.

In a concert review of their performance at the Meridian Arts Centre, That Canadian Magazine described the project as “more than a showcase of individual talents — it’s a testament to the possibilities when diverse musical traditions meet on equal ground.” The review praised the ensemble’s ability to weave personal histories, global perspectives, and contemporary jazz language into a compelling and unified live experience, emphasizing the depth of connection between the artists and the audience.

The ensemble’s self-titled debut album (Cellar Live, 2022) received a JUNO Award nomination in 2023. Their two subsequent projects — Roots (instrumental) and Wings (vocal) — present original compositions that honour the cultural, ethnic, and familial histories of the Ostara artists, alongside an inspired roster of guest collaborators.

In a genre and industry where women remain significantly underrepresented, The Ostara Project stands as a powerful expression of perseverance, community, and creative agency.

New growth rising. Stretching to claim space. Propelled by joy. This is the music of Ostara.

Music will include compositions by all band members:

Amanda Tosoff – Piano

Jodi Proznick – Bass

Valerie Lacombe – Drums

Rachel Therrien – Trumpet/Flugelhorn

Claire Devlin – Saxophones

Kim Zombik – Vocals
