Where Bach Meets Birdland: Classical Jazz Quartet Celebrates the Art of Musical Conversation.

Audiences will discover that answer when Grant Freeman’s Classical Jazz Quartet takes the stage for an evening that blurs the boundaries between two musical worlds, celebrating the rich dialogue between classical masterworks and jazz improvisation.
At the heart of the program is Claude Bolling’s iconic Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano—the groundbreaking 1975 collaboration with legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal that forever changed perceptions of what classical and jazz musicians could create together. Originally hailed for its remarkable ability to captivate audiences across musical traditions, the suite remains one of the most successful and beloved cross-genre works ever written. Its spirited interplay between flute and piano shifts effortlessly between elegance, wit, lyricism and swing, creating what the original liner notes described as a conversation in which the classical and jazz traditions “fight, interrupt, stimulate, mimic and even embrace each other.”
Inspired by that same spirit of collaboration, the Classical Jazz Quartet presents a program that journeys from Johann Sebastian Bach to George Harrison, George Shearing, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and the irresistible rhythms of Cuba and Brazil.
The evening opens with the jazz standard Lullaby of Birdland, written by George Shearing for New York’s legendary Birdland Jazz Club, before moving through inventive arrangements of Bach by celebrated French pianist Jacques Loussier, whose pioneering work demonstrated that jazz improvisation and Baroque music could exist beautifully side by side.
The quartet also offers fresh interpretations of familiar favourites including Here Comes the Sun, transformed into a graceful jazz waltz, the Cuban classic El Manisero (The Peanut Vendor), Nelson Riddle’s lush orchestration of I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Irving Berlin’s timeless Cheek to Cheek, and the bossa nova masterpiece No More Blues (Chega de Saudade). Each arrangement highlights the ensemble’s blend of virtuosity, imagination and joyful improvisation.
Leading the ensemble is pianist, arranger and musical director Grant Freeman, whose career spans more than four decades as an educator, performer and composer. His passion for both orchestral music and jazz is perfectly reflected in this unique project, which showcases his original arrangements alongside timeless classics.
Joining Freeman are an accomplished group of Vancouver Island musicians: flutist Judith Pazder, a respected educator, arranger and founding member of the Victoria High Notes Flute Choir; veteran drummer Wayne Finucan, whose remarkable career has included more than 300 television broadcasts and decades in recording and film production; and fretless bassist Dave Mitchell, a sought-after performer in gypsy jazz and swing ensembles throughout the region. Together they bring decades of experience and a shared love of musical exploration to every performance.
