Swing, Style & Sophistication: Ralph Barrat Quartet Delivers an Evening of Timeless Jazz
The Georgia Straight Jazz Society proudly presents an evening of timeless standards, swinging rhythms, and unforgettable melodies as pianist and vocalist Ralph Barrat takes the stage with an all-star quartet featuring some of Vancouver Island’s finest jazz musicians.
A familiar face on jazz stages from Vancouver to communities throughout Vancouver Island, Barrat has built a reputation as an engaging performer whose warm vocals and elegant piano style capture the spirit of the great American songbook. Whether fronting a sophisticated Sinatra-inspired ensemble or performing intimate solo piano engagements, Barrat brings effortless charm, musicality, and a deep love of jazz to every performance.
Joining him is an exceptional lineup of accomplished musicians whose collective experience spans decades and countless performances. Trumpeter Eryn, originally from Salt Spring Island and now based in the Comox Valley, is a versatile performer whose musical roots extend well beyond traditional jazz. Having performed with the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, the acclaimed Balkan brass ensemble Bucan Bucan, and a variety of jazz and world music groups, Eryn draws inspiration from legendary artists including Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Dave Douglas, and Clark Terry. Since making the Comox Valley home in 2025, he has quickly become a welcome addition to the region’s thriving jazz community.
On bass is veteran musician Dave Stevenson, whose more than three decades of professional performance have taken him through jazz, country swing, rock, and bluegrass. Beginning his career in Vancouver, Stevenson established himself as one of the West Coast’s dependable and versatile bassists before relocating to the Comox Valley over a decade ago. Today he remains an in-demand performer with numerous ensembles throughout the region.
Completing the quartet is celebrated drummer Greg Hill, a cornerstone of the North Island music scene for over forty years. Revered as a true “pocket drummer,” Hill has led and supported countless bands, including the Blue Monks and Vintage Velvet, while sharing the stage with respected jazz artists such as Art and Lee Ellefson, Roy Reynolds, and Annie Siegel. His tasteful brushwork, impeccable swing, and intuitive musical touch make him one of the Island’s most admired percussionists.
Together, these four accomplished musicians create a quartet rich in chemistry, experience, and artistry. Audiences can expect an evening filled with classic jazz standards, memorable vocals, inspired improvisation, and the timeless elegance of the Great American Songbook—all delivered with warmth, style, and the joy that only live jazz can bring.
