🎷 The Jam Is Back!

Get ready to swing into fall as the Georgia Straight Jazz Society launches its brand-new Jazz Jam on Thursday, October 23 at The Mex Pub in Courtenay. Whether you’re a player, singer, or simply a jazz lover, this is your chance to connect, create, and celebrate live music in the Comox Valley.

The evening kicks off with a powerhouse host band featuring some of Vancouver Island’s finest musicians:

  • John Hyde – Bass
A highly respected bassist with over four decades on national and international stages, John has performed with jazz greats including P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, Guido Basso, and Don Thompson. A former Mount Royal University jazz instructor, he now anchors the Comox Valley’s vibrant music scene.
  • Brock Meades – Bass
Based in Nanaimo, Brock brings his deep groove and rich tone to the stage. A graduate of VIU’s jazz program and Fraser MacPherson Scholarship recipient, he’s performed across the Island with artists such as Dave Restivo, Hans Verhoeven, Kelby MacNayr, and Ryan Oliver.
  • Jeff Drummond – Guitar
A versatile guitarist, composer, and educator, Jeff’s 25-year career spans jazz, funk, and soul. As a founding member of the award-nominated trio Sinistrio, he’s known for creative improvisation, infectious energy, and a sound that bridges classic and contemporary jazz.
  • Beau Stocker – Drums & Organizer
With a PhD in music performance from the UK and research into East African rhythmic traditions, Beau fuses global grooves with modern jazz artistry. An active performer and educator based in Union Bay, he also leads the experimental ensemble Ultraviolet.

🎤 Calling All Jammers
Musicians who’d like to sit in can sign up on the board before the host band finishes their first set (around 6:15–6:20 p.m.).

Thanks to The Mex Pub, underage jammers are welcome to participate! When not on stage, they can hang out in the “GSJS Young Artists Hang” area near the bar — a safe and social spot to learn and listen.
